Understanding the hidden signs of neglect and abuse in children with intellectual disabilities
Author(s): Sumitra Choudhary
Abstract: Children with intellectual disabilities (ID) are at a significantly higher risk of neglect and abuse due to their unique vulnerabilities, including communication difficulties, social isolation, and dependency on caregivers. Despite this increased risk, identifying abuse in these children presents major challenges for caregivers, educators, and professionals because the warning signs are often non-verbal or behavioral. This review explores the hidden signs of neglect and abuse in children with intellectual disabilities, focusing on behavioral, emotional, and physical indicators. It further discusses the challenges in identification and the critical role of caregivers and professionals in detection and prevention. The need for tailored training and early intervention strategies is highlighted to better protect this vulnerable population.
