Understanding the label ‘disability’

Author(s): Bharti Kaushik, Divya Shokeen and Samantha Narula

Abstract: The Rights of Persons with Disability Act (RPwD) 2016 recognizes 21 disability conditions and also recommends relevant provisions for those in need. An early identification of disability conditions facilitates need-based early interventions, hence, awareness at the school level becomes essential. The present paper focuses on the awareness and knowledge of Pre-Service Teachers as well as the cross-country analysis of disability definitions. Meta-analysis was used to compare the disability definitions of 29 different countries including India. 8 countries had adopted the disability definition of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). 100 pre-service teachers of Delhi were asked to list the number and names of the disability conditions. It was found that 27 per cent of the participants were aware of only 4 correct disabilities as per the RPwD Act, 2016. The most recurring were Locomotor Disability, Hearing Impairment, Low-vision and Blindness.
