Analysis of awareness of sexual health education in parents having adolescent children with intellectual disability

Abstract: Parents of adolescents with intellectual disability face many difficulties to raise them. It becomes more difficult with the increasing age of the individuals with intellectual disability. Most of the parents have no idea that how and when they should educate about sexual health to their typically growing children. It is important for parents to educate their children with intellectual disability about sexual health. The risk of sexual exploitation and abuse is very high in individuals with intellectual disability. The present study was conducted to find out the awareness among the parents of individuals with intellectual disability about sexual health education. Subjects for the present study were 60 parents of individuals with intellectual disability in semi-urban area of Sonipat, Haryana. The present study is a cross-sectional study and subjects were selected by making use of random sampling technique. The data collected through interview and survey method using a questionnaire generate by using tool SENAC. A total set of 25 questions with different aspects of sexual health education from the point of view of intellectual disability named as body awareness, personal care and hygiene, relationships, healthy boundaries, and risk management was used. The results revealed that there is a significant difference in different aspects of sexual health education among the parents of individuals with intellectual disability about sexual health education. No significant difference with respect to the gender on awareness about sexual health education among the parents of individuals with intellectual disability was found.
