Psychological impact of physical disabilities in adolescents of Bihar, India

Author(s): Shivajee Kumar

Abstract: This study explores the psychological impact of physical disabilities on adolescents in Bihar, India, focusing on mental health challenges and coping mechanisms within their unique socio-cultural environment. Adolescents with physical disabilities often encounter heightened risks of anxiety, depression, and social isolation, compounded by limited access to mental health resources and pervasive societal stigma. This research aims to examine these psychological impacts, considering factors such as family support, peer relationships, and the influence of regional attitudes toward disability. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, quantitative data were gathered through standardized mental health surveys, while qualitative insights were obtained from in-depth interviews with adolescents, family members, and educators. Findings reveal a significant correlation between supportive family environments and positive psychological outcomes, highlighting the critical role of family and peer networks in mitigating adverse mental health effects. The study underscores the need for region-specific mental health interventions, community awareness programs, and support systems to foster resilience among disabled adolescents in Bihar. These insights contribute to the limited literature on disability and mental health in India, offering practical implications for policymakers and social workers dedicated to improving adolescent mental health.
