Abstract: Introduction: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not an uncommon
disorder, but the awareness regarding ASD, its characteristics, assessment, and
management among the adult population is limited. Aim: This study is aimed at assessing the awareness about autism spectrum
disorder, its characteristics, and assessment and management aspects in adult
population. Methods: A questionnaire-based survey was carried out among the adult population
≥18 years. The mean age was 27.7±10.43 years. Individuals were asked to fill in
a questionnaire. Initially they were asked if they knew about ASD or not. If
they answered yes, they were asked to respond to the questionnaire of 20
questions under 5 domains namely characteristics of ASD, assessment,
management, education and vocation. Individuals who answered all the 4
questions correctly in each domain were considered as 100% correct, 3 questions
as 75% correct and 2 questions as 50% correct in each domain. People who
responded to I question correctly in each domain and did not answer any
question correctly were considered as having less awareness in each domain. Results: Out of 301 individuals who responded to the questionnaire, 129 (42.9%)
were aware and 172(57.1%) were unaware of ASD. Among 129 individuals who filled
the questionnaires all of them (100%) were aware about characteristics of ASD
[21.7% (n=28)-100%, 59% (n = 76)- 75% and 19.3% (n=25)-50%], 87.59% assessment[
81% (n = 104)-100%,5.4 %(n=7) -75%, 1.5% (n = 2)- 50%], 68.9% management
[32.5% (n = 42)-100%,16.3% (n = 21) - 75%, 20.2% (n=26)- 50%], 39.5%
education [26.1% (n = 34) - 100%,12% (n = 15) -75%, 1.5%(n=2)-50%], and 56.5%
vocation [33.3% (n = 43)- 100%, 13.2% (n = 17)- 75%,10.1% (n = 13 )-50%]. Discussion: Most participants in this study were aware about
the characteristics and assessment of ASD. Participants were less aware about
the management options educational opportunities and vocational placement of
ASD. Conducting public awareness campaigns and awareness programs through
social media can improve awareness about management options, educational
opportunities and vocational placement of ASD.
