Impact of sensory integration therapy on autistic features in Jansky Bielschowsky disease

Author(s): Varnit Shanker and Madan Lal Dogiwal

Abstract: CLN6-Batten disease, a form of Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (NCLs), is an unusual lysosomal storage disorder marked by gradual decline in motor, visual, cognitive abilities and early death by 12-15 age. In this condition there are sensory processing deficits related to the autism spectrum, for which Sensory Integration Therapy (SIT) has been wielded. Here, as NCL case a prototype, the effectiveness of the SIT in increasing self-care in children with autistic features in genetic conditions is presented. In the case presented, (a) motor, (b) sensory, (c) cognitive, (d) emotional, (e) communication, and (f) social development are augmented by the SIT. SIT also improves fitness skills, such as jumping on both legs, throwing a ball, along with catching a ball. Therefore, this case suggests that the SIT might have beneficial effects on improving sensory processing defects, which are found in children with autistic spectrum linked to genetic conditions.
