Virtual autism: A review of the literature and current understanding
Author(s): Garima Yadav
Abstract: The term Virtual Autism is used to describe a form of developmental disorder that might appear as a result of excessive screen time or exposure to digital media during crucial early childhood development period. Although its precise description and clinical status are still up for debate, a number of studies indicate that excessive screen time may impact children's neurological and behavioral development, resulting in symptoms that are similar to those of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This paper reviews previous studies on the relationship between digital media exposure and the development of Autism-like behaviors. It provides an overview of the potential mechanisms behind the phenomenon, compares it to traditional ASD, and discusses the implications for early childhood development and interventions. The paper concludes with a summary of the evidence and the need for further research to clarify the relationship between virtual autism and traditional forms of ASD.
